Dance Dance Revolution World

Dance Dance Revolution World was announced on May 7, 2024, and released on June 12, 2024.

The name is misleading: despite having World in its title, it is not available worldwide. In contrast to the wider releases of DDR SuperNOVA, DDR A and DDR A20+, Konami has not released DDR World in Canada or Europe, with these regions also lacking an official DDR A3 release.

DDR World is the seventh generation of Dance Dance Revolution. It still uses the same Bemani PC system as DDR X, the fourth generation release from 2008. DDR World introduces many changes:

The visual theme is based on hyperpop green on all compatible cabinets. Previously, a golden theme was used on 20th Anniversary cabinets from DDR A20 to DDR A3, while other cabinets used alternative themes.
The interface uses simple 2D art. Most of the 3D elements from previous games, including the in-game stage with dancing characters originating in DDR SuperNOVA, were removed.
Only LCD-based cabinets are supported. DDR World does not support CRT-based cabinets, even if the CRT is replaced with an LCD.
Several types of play, such as courses and DDR Selection, were removed.
A new DJ, or announcer, provides vocal commentary throughout the game. The voice behind the DJ is unknown, but has been compared to Sonic the Hedgehog.
There are many events, such as World League (again, "World" excludes many countries) and space-theme unlockable songs.
178 new songs as of December 2025 are available in DDR World, mostly Konami originals, but also including 47 new licenses.
- Several of the licenses are covers of Konami original songs.
- Two English-language licensed songs, both by Porter Robinson, were added on May 1, 2025: "Cheerleader" and "Knock Yourself Out XD", from the album Smile! :D
- The other 19 licenses are Japanese. Except for "Akatsuki" and "Super Heroine!!", the song titles also display in Japanese.

What DDR World Gets Right

Almost all songs from DDR A3 return in DDR World. As of December 2025, there are a total of six removals: "Lesson by DJ", "Play Hard" and four Japanese songs.
- Another Japanese song, "S'il Vous Président" (not a francophone song), was removed in DDR on October 1, 2024, but restored in DDR World on December 25, 2024.
Players can now enable more options, like displaying Fast and Slow steps, for free on DDR World cabinets.

It is disappointing that Konami has chosen to limit the availability of DDR yet again. To call this game DDR World, all while refusing to release it in many countries and arcades, is a disservice to the many worldwide DDR fans. It is 2025. There is no reason to keep these restrictions with DDR.

Additionally, it would be better to let players choose between the flat 2D interface from DDR World, the 3D interface that games from DDR SuperNOVA to DDR A3 offered, and the classic interfaces from DDR Extreme and older. The DDR Selection mode in the DDR A series gave players five interfaces from older games, albeit each interface was limited to a few songs. It would help to add this mode, or a very similar one, to DDR World.

Some of the interface changes could be overlooked if the game was available in Canada, Europe and preferably some nations with no modern release. However, it is not. As a result, I am mainly uninterested in DDR World, and cannot support it. Players should ask Konami to do better.

Update on December 4, 2025: A release of DDR World for independent arcades is anticipated in early 2026. This will include at least one American arcade. However, this is still a limited release. So far, it will exclude popular chains like Dave & Buster's, Cineplex Xscape and others. Independent arcades will also pay much more for DDR World than DDR SuperNOVA or similar games. Due to this, I am still not supporting DDR World for the foreseeable future.
